Why do we prefer seeing new watches in person rather than at home on a computer screen? It’s not only about the tactile experience of handling and trying on a watch (though that certainly helps). It’s also because the experience feels much more memorable when it’s shared.

Inaugral Melbourne Penthouse Event

Considering the compromises the watch industry has had to make over the past 18 months, we felt quite lucky to be able to host the annual Rolex 2021 novelties preview dinner. Rolex Australia and New Zealand General Manager Benoît Falletti joined us to welcome local watch enthusiasts for an exclusive preview of the new Rolex watches in our two-storey penthouse above The Hour Glass Melbourne retail space.

Adam D’Sylva Culinary Experience

For the occasion, renowned chef Adam D’Sylva created a one-off culinary experience mixing new and old favourites from his sister restaurants, Tonka and Coda. Growing up in a mixed Italian/Indian family, the menu reflected his unique style in blending the culinary traditions of both regions. ‘I fell in love with food from an early age. My nonna and aunty looked after us when we were young and always let us cook and eat with them,’ explained Adam to the AGFG.

Over dinner, inevitably, one of the topics of conversation was watches. Sure, there was plenty of discussion over the new Cosmograph Daytona with a Meteorite dial and the ‘fluted’ dial motif Datejust 36 watches. There were also many interesting personal stories involving watches being shared. One gentleman recalled his travels through South East Asia in the late 90s and how the Rolex worn on his wrist has transcended its role as a watch because of the nostalgia and memories embued in it. He described it as a good luck talisman and one of his most prized possessions.

In between the main course and dessert, guests were welcome to freely discover the new Rolex 2021 novelties at their own leisure. Surrounded by luscious floral displays and flickering candles, the penthouse overlooking Collins Street made for the perfect place to try on the newest creations from the Swiss manufacturer.

The series of two dinners proved to be a resounding success for all who attended. Good food, good company and fantastic watches. Thank you to all who attended.
